There are already dozens of streaming services. From Netflix, Videoland and Apple TV to Disney+ and Amazon Prime. The latter may soon come with a separate service and app for (live) sports. At least that is what American media has heard from insiders who, of course, remain anonymous. Although Amazon does not want to confirm this possible move yet, the CEO of the company has recently stated that broadcasting (live) sports is a unique service that Amazon wants to continue to invest in.
The company uses sports in a bid to grow its content library, bolster its advertising arm, and add more Prime subscribers who buy products on its marketplace.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has previously expressed a desire to spend more on sports.
“Sports is such a unique asset. If you look every year at the most watched programs, sports often occupies 75% of those spots,” Jassy said at a DealBook conference in November. “And you know, they drive live engagement and they drive Prime subscriptions.”
Current live sports offered by the company include exclusive rights to the NFL's Thursday Night Football, along with some Premier League soccer matches and Yankees baseball games.
It's still unclear when Amazon will launch the standalone sports application.
The development of the sports application by the company suggests that it is looking to explore new avenues for monetising its live sports investments.
Moreover, Amazon might provide a different subscription tier with access to its sports content, the report said.
